As an SEO expert that has worked with a lot of clients, I realize that majority of companies that invest in SEO campaigns don’t make a success out of it. While there are many reasons why these SEO campaigns are unsuccessful, I want to let you know the few critical reasons why many SEO campaigns end up dead.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a great marketing technique for companies that want to succeed. SEO is capable of generating organic search engine traffic from your target customers, which will result in more sales for your business.
If you ask business owners, SEO experts, or online marketing professionals about how search engine optimization (SEO) works. They will all reply to you differently depending on the experience they had with the technique. Some of them will give details on how great, and effective SEO is, while some will shatter your expectation by giving you negative feedback on the technique.
The reason why you will be giving different replies about SEO strategy is that people’s experiences are different with respect to how they manage their SEO campaign. No doubt, there are more than enough examples of companies that have succeeded mainly by building their business entire marketing strategies on SEO, while there are also many companies that have failed in their SEO campaigns.
Many companies with online presence practice SEO, so it is difficult to really point out the percentage of companies that fail in their SEO campaigns, but from my experience as an SEO expert, 3 among 5 business owners I talk to failed in their business SEO campaign, and when I do research about the reasons why they failed I found that most of them share the same things in common.
In this article, I want to list the common reasons why many SEO campaigns are unsuccessful.
Four Reasons SEO Campaigns are Unsuccessful.
1. High Expectations to Succeed.
The number one reason why most SEO campaigns aren’t successful is that most companies have high expectations of their SEO efforts. Having this high expectation is not the reason why they fail, the reason why they failed is that they quit too soon when their expectations are not instantly met.
If you want to make a success in your SEO campaign your expectation shouldn’t be too high for you to give up easily, even if your SEOs or online marketing professionals might have promised you that SEO is the best marketing technique out there that can drive organic traffic to your website.
It is true that an SEO strategy is budget-friendly, generates massive organic traffic, is needed by most businesses, and increases your business credibility, but that shouldn’t make you think that you can start to see results immediately after you start your marketing campaign.
Because if your expectation is to start seeing results from your SEO efforts instantly, you will give up, and feel disappointed if you are yet to see results three months after you invested in SEO.
This is the reason why many business owners quickly invest in SEO, and they abandon their SEO efforts prematurely.
If you have not been told, I need you to know that SEO is a long-term marketing strategy that takes time before it generates results.
You might want to know how much time; well, depending on your industry, and competitors it might take up to 3 to 6 months before you start seeing results, while some industries that are highly competitive might take up to a year before results start coming.
Quitting early is not ideal for any business that wants to be successful in SEO marketing.
2. Lack of Effort From Those Handling the Campaign
Apart from quitting too early, some SEO campaigns fail because of the lack of marketing effort by those that are handling the SEO project. There are many reasons for this to happen, but from my experience, the main reason why this happens is that most people already believed that SEO marketing is risky so they are not interested in investing resources (Time or Money) in it.
Another reason I don’t pay attention to is that people handling the SEO campaign might not have the skill, and experience that will enable them to have a successful SEO campaign.
Anything might have caused the lack of effort, but you need to know that SEO is not a marketing strategy that can succeed without putting in lots of effort. The only way you can be successful in your SEO campaign is to invest heavily in it, your investment can be in form of money or time.
3. Industry Competition.
There is likely no business on earth without competitors, and those competitors should be recognized so that you will be able to monitor their marketing activities in order to come up with something better than theirs.
It is really important to do competitor analyses on your business competitors, as you both are competing for the same customers, so they must not outsmart you in any marketing activity.
This is the reason why you shouldn’t ignore your competitors if you are planning for your business SEO campaign. You shouldn’t ignore your competitors because they might have as well invested in SEO strategy before you do.
Learn about how they run their SEO campaign, and come up with an SEO strategy that will be better than they do. Every business has a weakness so are your competitors too. Learn about their SEO campaign, and capitalize on it by coming out with something better.

4. Involving In black hat SEO Technique
Another reason that cannot be overlooked is that many businesses involve in black hat SEO techniques. They might directly involve themselves in it, but they might have hired an SEO company that practices black hat SEO techniques in a bid to quickly generate results.
When SEO companies promise big results, most of them are able to generate these results in a few days by practicing black hat SEO techniques that don’t follow search engine standard rules.
Involving in black hat SEO means they are not following the normal procedure to generate results.
Black hat SEO involves;
- Plagiarism: Copying content from third-party websites to your website, so that you can easily generate results for those keywords.
- Abuse of backlinks: Some of them also buy backlinks from third-party websites in order for search engines to give your website credibility.
You can earn backlinks by publishing high-quality original content on your web page instead of buying it.
It is possible you see results from black hat SEO technique, but it won’t last long, because your website will be penalized if search engines get to know about it, and this will not be good for your business reputation, and credibility.
Most SEO campaigns are not supposed to fail if the people behind commit to a long-term plan and strategy. What SEO needs is patience, you will be successful if you are patient in your SEO investment, SEO is an ongoing marketing strategy that requires time and effort.
To be successful in your SEO strategy, you should do the following;
- Create a long-term SEO plan.
- Create a mobile-responsive website.
- Provide a great user experience for your website visitors.
- Create high-quality content that your potential customers will love to read.
By doing all these, and following white hat SEO technique, you will succeed in your SEO marketing campaign.
